Aichi, located on Japan’s mainland, Honchu Island, is best know for its high industrial output, including car manufacture and the aerospace industries. This is the production heartland for Nissan and Toyota.
The West of the prefecture is dominated by the city and suburbs of Nagoya, fourth largest conurbation in Japan. The robust economy has led to rapid population growth, which at 7.4% is higher than Tokyo itself.
While the region shares a coast on Mikawa Bay with the beach district, Shizukoa, there are no significant resorts as such in Aichi. Intriguingly, this is however home to a number of fertility festivals, including one, the Onnagata festival on March 15th, dedicated to the usually taboo female genitalia in deified form.. However, the prime sumo wrestling tournament takes place here annually, bringing the biggest and the best to this working-class town. Also watch out for the expo in July.
