Gifu is a prefecture smack bang in the middle of Honshu island being landlocked by mountains. The main tourist attractions are the town of Takayama and the cluster of villages called Shirakawa-go. Takayama has managed to preserve it old feel especially in the beautiful old town. Well known for its high quality timber and highly skilled carpenters it has made its mark on the map many years ago. The famous Takayama spring festival is one of Japans most popular festivals each year. Shirakawa-go's old traditional farmhouses were added to the UNESCO list of world heritage sites in 1995. Being in a remote mountainous region in the Gifu prefecture the local villages are often covered in snow.

Due to its landlocked position, Gifu prefecture is an ideal place for lovers of the outdoors. Living rural in a traditional property is the epitome for many overseas property investors and even Japanese. Since there are people everywhere in Japan it is nice to get off the beaten track and live in partial solitude and peace, away from the bustle of the big cities. Finding a suitable property might take a little longer than usual here.
