The northernmost and least developed of Japan’s island, this is where to experience Nature pure, especially snow and ice. During the harsh winters, the sea is even apt to freeze over. This is a popular spot for snowboarding and skiing, though many come for the cherry blossoms in May and hike or cycle till September. Hokkaido is the second largest island, but is mountainous and very sparsely populated, representing only 5% of the Japanese total. A hilly, forested peninsula curves down towards the Southwest, while to the North farming country extends over the central Ishikari plain and several smaller lowland areas on the East coast. The economy depends on agriculture, forestry, fishing and dairy produce. This is a popular recreational area for a variety of pursuits, including the honey harvest and hot springs lodges.
