With its rugged coast, Iwate sits in the northeaster part of Honshu island. According to local legend, a local devil would harass the people of Iwate. When the locals prayed to the spirits for protection the devil was immediately shackled and promised never to disturb the locals again. As sign of his proof he left a hand imprint giving the name Iwate (rock hand). With local temples, museums, art and nearby caves Iwate offers a multitude of activities and sightseeing to tourists. The capital Morioka has a thriving communication manufacturing industry. With three rivers congregating in Morioka and an active volcano to the northeast of the city, Morioka also sits on the Shinkansen train line for ease of access.
