On the western side of Kyushu is the prefecture of Kumamoto with its aptly name city. Famous for being the home to one of Japan's largest castles, Kumamoto is also not far away from the Aso Kuju national park that is home to the impressive Aso volcano. Mt. Aso has an ancient caldera that measures up to 25 km and over 100 km's in circumference. It is still active occasionally and therefore sometimes closed to the public. On the slopes of the volcano are rolling hills full of greenery and wide open space. The town of Aso actually sits right within the caldera as well as several other volcanic peaks.
