The first ever capital of Japan was established in Heijo in 710 which is today known as Nara. The city has played an important role in history and has retained many of its historic and ancient buildings and Buddhist temples. The Todaji temple is a large temple that has a large Buddha statue. Nara's central park has wild deer which are now part of the city and the Naramachi district is an old former merchant district with old wooden houses. There is plenty more to see and do in Nara. With many old temples and shrines you could probably spend a whole year there and still not see everything. 60 % of the Nara prefecture is forested with the main industry being timber, lumber and textiles.
