Shimane prefecture is the home of Japan's oldest shrine, the "Izumo Taisha". The shrine is dedicated to the nephew of the sun goddess and plays an important role in the Shinto's annual gathering. The capital of Shimane is Matsue. Known as the “water city”, Matsue is conveniently located at the eastern shores of Lake Shinji.
