At the heart of Japan, deep in Shogun territory, lies magical Mount Fiji, in Shizuoka, or “Tranquil Hills”. The Southern Japanese Alps, picturesque lake scenery and five hundred kilometres of coastline are the backdrop to numerous historical sites, from feudal castles to prehistoric ruins, where legendary Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu set up his unofficial capital in the seventeenth century. The temperate climate makes for mild people and four distinct seasons to enjoy. This is also said to be the secret of the region’s economic success, with growth and productivity flourishing under the benign indifference of the elements. Beneath the Earth’s crust there are rumblings of the more destructive elements sometimes evident in other parts of Japan, but here in Shizuoka they bubble to the surface only as beneficial hot springs. Modern Shoguns would ride motorcycles, and Suzuki and Yamaha are based here.

The foremost coastal resort area on the Eastern shores of the Izu peninsula offers respite to the neighbouring industrial districts. There is arguably no better place on Earth for resort investments. Since Japan’s economic success has never seriously been in doubt and growth continues steadily, there is no bubble effect expected at Shizuoko, other than that of the mud at the hot springs.
