Tottori prefecture is the least populous prefecture in Japan. It is located on Honshu island in the Chugoku region. The place is most famously known for the Tottori sand dunes, the only large sand dune system in Japan. Covering some 30km in square, the dunes are visited by millions of tourists every year. Tottori city is the capital of the prefecture and is home to the now collapsed Tottori castle. One common and unique sight is to see is that most women carry umbrellas in Tottori to protect themselves against the sun. Upper class residents even use lavishly decorated umbrellas to stand apart from the middle class. This is also reflected in the annual castle festival.
